Introducing A Walk of Calm
Amparo Kent and Medway is developing A Walk of Calm, a new peer support initiative offering people bereaved by suicide the opportunity to meet, walk and connect with others who understand the complexities of this kind of loss.
Building on the principles behind our A Cup of Calm events, A Walk of Calm will provide a gentle and informal environment where people can spend time with others who have experienced suicide bereavement.
There is no expectation or pressure to talk about your experience. It is simply an opportunity to walk, have a conversation if you want to, and make connections in a safe, natural outdoor setting.
Walking, talking and connecting
Grief following a death by suicide can be complex. People can experience intense and sometimes persistent feelings including anxiety, isolation, shame and distress, alongside intrusive thoughts or memories associated with their bereavement.
For some people, sitting in a room and talking about their experiences can feel difficult.
Walking alongside somebody can offer a different environment. Conversation can develop naturally, silence is equally acceptable, and being outdoors provides space to step away from everyday surroundings.
Spending time walking in natural environments is also associated with improved mood, reduced stress and anxiety, and a greater sense of wellbeing.
Developing A Walk of Calm in Kent and Medway
Amparo is working with Medway Council to develop the first Walk of Calm events in Kent and Medway.
The Council has offered Amparo staff the opportunity to undertake walk leader training with its Public Health team, alongside support with route planning and risk assessment to help ensure walks are appropriately planned and safely delivered.
Training will begin shortly, with the first Walk of Calm planned for later this year.
Once dates, locations and routes are confirmed, details will be published on the Amparo website and through our social media channels.
Look out for details of our first Walk of Calm in Kent and Medway, coming soon.
