Amparo Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, is a free and confidential service delivered by a team of experienced and knowledgeable Suicide Liaison Workers, based across the region.
Liaison Workers listen and provide emotional support to anyone affected and bereaved by suicide, and can also help with a range of practical matters such as:
- Liaising with police and coroners
- Helping with media enquiries
- Preparing for and attending the inquest
- Finding other, appropriate, local support services
Thanks to additional funding made available by Portsmouth City Council, there is also an Outreach Team, with two Outreach Suicide Liaison Workers specialising in reaching and supporting people who are neurodivergent and people from the LGBTQ+ community.
Clients are contacted within 24 hours of their referral being received, and then are assigned a Suicide Liaison Worker who will contact them within seven days to establish a support plan.
Amparo also offers a BACP-accredited counselling service for children and young people bereaved by suicide in the region.
What people say about Amparo
Very satisfactory, without the help I received I could have been a lot worse. Having the help has definitely given me a more positive outlook on things.
The help was amazing.
I found this very helpful and it’s made me feel a lot more positive.
I am so grateful for this service, [Liaison Worker] was such a help to me & my family, I can’t imagine where I would be if it wasn’t for this lady truly grateful xx
I felt [Liaison Worker] understood my situation and it was helpful to talk through those situations with someone outside my usual family and friendship groups. [Liaison Worker] also shared some of her own past experiences which made me feel less alone.
I was very grateful for [Liaison Worker’s] visits and support at a difficult time. Also it was helpful to have an experienced person around for the pre-inquest and the inquest itself.
